The Atlanta Hawks (shortened from once the “Blackhawks” after the Blackhawk War in 1831) first came about in 1968. Prior to coming to Atlanta, the franchise played in the Tri-Cities region, Milwaukee, and St. Louis. The Hawks have been to the NBA finals only twice and have yet to produce an NBA championship or an MVP, although Dikembe Mutumbo won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award consecutively in 1997 and 1998.               Dominique Wilkins has become the historical face of the franchise and is regarded as one of the NBA's 50 greatest players in the league's long history. Wilkins was a high-flying dunker and proven scorer. Even with a player of that caliber, the Hawks have been an unsuccessful NBA franchise. Their best season was in '86/'87 when they posted a 57-25 record, while their worst season was recently in '04/'05 at just 13-69. The Hawks are in a rebuilding process though, with young and athletic players such as Josh Smith and Al Horford, and have already acquired respected league veterans in Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby to lead the team. Under new coach Mike Woodson, many Atlanta Hawks fans believe the team is closer to an NBA title than it ever has been.
