The Atlanta Hawks (shortened from once the “Blackhawks” after the Blackhawk War in 1831) first came about in 1968. Wilkins was a high-flying dunker and proven scorer. Even with a player of that caliber, the Hawks have been an unsuccessful NBA franchise. Their best season was in '86/'87 when they posted a 57-25 record, while their worst season was recently in '04/'05 at just 13-69. The Hawks are in a rebuilding process though, with young and athletic players such as Josh Smith and Al Horford, and have already acquired respected league veterans in Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby to lead the team. Under new coach Mike Woodson, many Atlanta Hawks fans believe the team is closer to an NBA title than it ever has been.
